Gaudí는 이렇게 말했다고 한다.
“the straight line is the line of men, but the curve is the line of god.”
이러한 그의 인식이 내게 유난히 반가운 이유는 우리 문화유산들이 보여주는 곡선에 대한 철학(곡선=생명, 직선=사멸 이라는)과 그의 인식이 맞닿아 있는 것으로 보이기 때문이다.
종합하거니와 이러한 그의 예술적인 특징들은 서로 열정적으로 결합하면서 극대의 상승효과를 창조한다. 그것은 Gaudi 이전에도 그의 사후에도 존재하기 어려운 그만의 Gaudíism이 되는 것이다.
그의 인격적 뒷받침이 이러한 작품세계를 완성하게 하였을 것이다.
어떠한 인간들의 작품세계라 할지라도 그 뒤에는 그러한 작품을 만든 작가들의 인격적인 품성의 특성이 배어있게 마련이다. 두말할 것도 없이 Gaudi의 작품들 속에도 그의 인격과 품성이 짙게 배어 있는 것이고 그러한 상상 속에서 그의 작품을 감상하는 것이 감동을 배가 시킨다.
그의 전기 중에서 episode 한 대목을 감상하면서 탄식하는 그의 마음속을 헤아려 보자.
This morning Mr Gaudi is at Casa Mila trying to calm down some residents who aren’t at all happy with their new home.
“Look here, Mr Architect,” says a lady. “You may be a genius, but with these curved walls and ceilings that look more like a cave than a flat, it’s impossible to furnish or hang a picture. And what about my grand piano? It doesn’t fit in
the music room! Can you tell me where exactly I’m supposed to put my piano?
“Madam,” answers Mr Gaudi with his eyebrows raised, on the verge of losing his patience, “I suggest you try playing the violin!”
After an hour of listening to complaints, the old architect’s head is about to explode and he goes up to the roof terrace for a bit of air. He breathes deeply and sits down on a step.
“People who are so conventional drive me mad!” he murmurs while he watches the flight of the pigeons in the sky.
“Why is it so difficult for them to let go of their prejudices and open up their imaginations?”
슬그머니 웃음이 흘러나오지 않는가? 일단 그 집의 여주인이나 Gaudi 모두가 옳다. 그러나 그 두 개의 가치관은 변화의 시점에서 이렇게 충돌하는 것이다.
답은 누군가가 인내하여야 하는 것이거니와, 과연 누가 인내하여야 하는 것일까?
이번에는, 앞의 Sagrada Familia 감상의 부분에서 인용했던 Gaudi 전기의 일부를 다시 한 번 되짚어보면서 Gaudi의 시간과 완성에 대한 겸허함과 인간의 역사에 대한 신뢰의 품격을 음미해 보자.
As evening falls, Mr Gaudí retires to talk to Josep Maria Jujol, one of his closest collaborators. The young architect puts a question to him that has been worrying him for some time.
“Master, the construction of the Sagrada Familia is going well. Soon we’ll finish the first towers, but have you considered that it may take many more years to complete this great work? Clearly we won’t live to see it finished.”
“My dear Jujol, I know who I am working for, and my client is in no hurry. How do you think the cathedrals of the past were built? The Sagrada Familia is a project that will span several generations, and each one will help to enrich its splendour. While it’s true that we can only begin it and allow others to finish it, one day it will be completed and it will be a joy to see. The Sagrada Familia will be the pride of Barcelona, I can assure you.”
오늘을 사는 우리 중에 누가 이런 거대 프로젝트를 이렇게 허심한 심정으로 수행할 수 있을까.
극적인 임종
또 다른 그의 전기가 전하는 그의 임종의 모습에서도 그의 소탈한 품성을 알아볼 수 있는 대목이 발견된다.
Antoni Gaudí died on the 10th of June, 1962. Upon leaving his work on the Sagrada Familia, he stepped out into the street without looking and was knocked down by a tram.
Seriously injured, he was taken to the public hospital but because of his shabby clothes, no one recognized him there.
When they eventually found out who he was, his friends suggested he be moved to a private clinic but he refused, saying : <“My place is here amongst the poor”>
Gaudí를 도운 사람들
물론 Gaudí가 그의 작업들을 모두 혼자 해낼 수 있었던 것은 아니다. 그의 주변에는 그를 전력으로 도왔던 유능한 조력자들이 포진하고 있었다.
앞에서 대화를 통해 소개한 Josep Maria Jujol을 비롯하여 루비오, 베렌게르, 벨베르 같은 당대의 유능한 건축사와 설계사, 그밖에도 많은 도공과 도예가, 건설업자들이 그를 헌신적으로 도왔다는 기록이 남아있다.
그러나 누구보다도 Gaudí와 그의 최대의 후원자이었던 Eusebi Güell 백작 사이의 우정은 한 사람의 천재가 어떻게 완성될 수 있는가를 보여주는 멋있는 하나의 story가 되지 않을까 싶다.
Seated on the bench that snakes around the square, the Count lets out a melancholy sigh. “Antoni, my friend,” he says, “we must yield to the evidence that this park will never be what I hoped it would be. Between those who think it’s too far from the city centre and those who detest your architecture, of the sixty plots up for sale only one has sold.”
“You are right, Don Eusebi.” answers Mr Gaudí. “I’m afraid that you and I are the only people who like my architecture.” “Well, now, I’m not saying that I love it, but I certainly respect it.” replies the Count, getting to his feet.
